Hi Patrick,
I believe you are talking about the pedigree ratings we put in the racefiles for JCapper.
The formula for these ratings is not proprietary or secret - it actually came out of a large pedigree research project Jim did, the results of which Barry Meadow published in a series of his monthly newsletters a few years ago. Jim gave me permission to explain how they are made.
We take the wins, 2nds and 3rds for the progeny of the sire and the damsire and create a Universal Rating (UR) for the sire and damsire. The time period we use is the last 7 years.
Universal Rating = UR = 100*(10*Wins + 5*2nds + 2*3rds) / total starts
This is a weighted rating, with wins weighted 10, 2nds 5 and 3rds 2. The highest rating possible is 1000, which would be winning every race. The lowest rating possible is 0, which would be a failure to finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd in any race
The pedigree rating we put in the file is a weighted rating of the sire and damsire URs = .86*sire UR + .64*damsire UR
The .86 and .64 weightings were found through testing to be the optimal weightings between sire and damsire.
That's it in a nutshell. They do not factor in anything else, like money earned, quality of the races, etc.
