New Program Update 2/28/2010

What's Inside:
This program update contains support for HDW JCapper Data Files. It also contains support for using the previously published Consensus Factors in UDMs when running in Playlist File Mode.

Support For HDW JCapper Data Files
There is a brand new module called the HDW File Manager. Using it is easy. It enables you to find, unzip, and process HDW files.

Video (25 min) showing how to use the HDW File Manager to process files from HDW:

Announcement:
I am very proud to announce that starting tomorrow, March 01, 2010 - HDW will be offering monthly data subscription plans to JCapper customers. The price is $119.00 a month... unlimited file downloads... both data and results... covering virtually all tracks that run thoroughbred races in North America.

Here is HDW's contact info:

HDW Inc.
100 Farmers Bank Square
Suite 120
Georgetown, Ky 40324

phone: 502-570-0333

email:
HDWInc@gmail.com

New Factors:
You should also know that I have spent a little R&D time looking at data samples using HDW databases. Included in this program update are two new factors:

PScore_HDW
This is JCapper PScore modified to take advantage of information found only in HDW JCapper data files.

BettorsToteProb_HDW and E~BettorsToteProb_HDW
This program update has a new odds line algorithm that takes advantage of information found only in HDW JCapper data files.

Be sure to look at both of these in the Data Window after using JCapper to build a few databases using HDW data files from scratch.

Look at the data and see for yourself. There is much to like.

Consensus Factors Now Enabled For Use In UDMs when running in Playlist File Mode.
All of the Consensus factors, as well as ESPRaceShape, and the new HDW factors are fully enabled for use in UDMs in this program update.

"Grab" them simply by selecting them by factor name from the factors drop down of the UDM Wizard.

Q. Do I have to rebuild databases from scratch after installing this program update?

A. Yes. This program update contains new playlist file data fields. This requires that a database be rebuilt from scratch before it can be queried in Playlist file mode using the Data Window found in this program update.

I'll come back and post more later... But right now I'm going back to work on the video about the HDW File Manager.

Progress Update:

The video is up... The link can be found in my post above.

Bug Report:

At least one user has reported a "file not found" message when clicking the HDW File Manager button on Screen Two of the File Downloader.

The file name is "HDWReader.exe" and the message is the result of the installer failing to copy the file over from the c:\JCapperBuild folder to the c:\JCapper\Exe folder.

If you get a "file not found" message when you click the button, consider manually copying the file from your c:\JCapperBuild folder to your c:\JCapper\Exe folder.

Or....

As of about 9:12 am pacific time today there is a new program download package where a line has been added to the installer's main script expicitly telling the installer to copy the file...

Meaning that redownloading and reinstalling the program should take care of it.

03/01/2010 Program Update (7:15 PM Pacific)

What's Inside:
I did this program update because of concerns voiced by those of you who called in to ask for help earlier today. Too many of you kept saying the same things.

Here's what you'll find inside:

I. Multiple places where you can launch the HDW File Manager:

1. The button shown in the video on Screen Two of the File Downloader.

2. A new button, simply labeled "HDW" just to the right of the "File Unzipper" button on the Main Module.

3. A new menu item labled "HDW File Manager"... On the Main Module, click Menu, then click HDW File Manager.

II. Multiple places where you can load .JCP files into the program:

1. Screen Two of the File Downloader... Hint: You first have to select "HDW JCapper Data File (*.jcp)" as your file type from the file type drop down just below the window pane where data file names are displayed.

2. The Card Loader... where it should have been all along... Hint: You first have to select "HDW JCapper Data File (*.jcp)" as your file type from the file type drop down just below the label where the name of your Default Data Folder is displayed... or just above the Find and Load/Browse and Load buttons.

Just a quick progress update...

I've been working on a new screen that's being integrated into the HDW File Mgr.

It's called the HDW File Download Tool.

It's going to make getting files from the HDW site about as seamless as I can make it:

1. You log in using your HDW userid and password.

2. You click a button labeled Que Files... causing all of the files that HDW has available for download on their site to appear in a list box. The files are sorted in date order - the most recent ones on top.

3. a. Highlight the files that you want...

or...

3. b. Click a button labeled "Synch to Disc" to have the module compare all HDW files in your target folder against the files that HDW has on their site... immediately followed by an auto highlight of every file that HDW has on their site that you don't already have sitting on your target folder.

4. You click a button labeled "Download"... The module iterates through the highlighted files... and saves them one at a time to your target folder.

Realistic ETA is Thursday this week.

I'm also working on a checkbox for this thing... which if you hit the Download button with the box checked the File Download Tool will send the list of downloaded files through the Auto-Pilot file unzip/build/archive routine of the HDW File Mgr. If not in the initial release, then the Auto-Pilot routine will be part of things very soon after.

So that Demo Users (who can't get into the private area of the board) are made aware of it too...

New Program Update 3/30/2010

What's Inside:

JCapper Past Performance Generator
This program update introduces a new module called The JCapper Past Performance Generator.

Link to Help Doc:
http://www.jcapper.com/helpDocs/PastPerformanceGenerator.html

Excerpt from Help Doc:

JCapper Past Performance Generator - General Overview
The JCapper Past Performance Generator provides fast easy generation of past performance reports. Simply point the module at a target folder, click File... click Open Data File, and then use the dialog box to select the data file that you want. As soon as you load a data file into the module, the Races Drop Down will auto populate with a list of available races in the current data file. From there, select the race that you want and the module will render a past performance report for that race.

Fast, simple, and effective.

Updated HTML Report Viewer
I've taken the same auto sizing logic found in the Past Performance Generator and applied it to the HTML Report Viewer. The module's built in web browser window will now auto size itself to fit the height and width of the module whenever you resize it. You can resize in a number of ways... use your mouse cursor to grab an edge of the module's screen and drag it across your screen, or double click the title bar to maximize, etc.

I think this is an improvement over trying to create module sizing routines tied to specific screen resolutions... especially given that hardware manufacturers keep cranking out new drivers and monitors that support ever larger screen resoltions.

Updated Data Window
I've added UDM Template buttons for dirt sprints, dirt routes, turf routes, turf sprints, riders, trainers, tracks, and class descriptors to the Data Window's SQL Expression Tool.

Easy to operate... click the appropriate button and the interface will auto populate the expression tool's textbox will valid sql for whatever it is you are trying to do... From there, just edit the auto generated code to fit the specific query you are trying to create.

Thanks to Fred (Stranded) for the idea. Thanks Fred!!!

Updated Database Builder
The Database Builder now reads the current default data folder each time the user clicks the Build Database button. You'll see the module auto pointed at the current default data folder as soon as the DB Builder screen is rendered. This is a small change in behavior from previous program versions where the Database Builder retrieved default data folder info only once... when the Main Module was first launched.

This means that if you are using the Data Folder Mgr to switch back and forth between folders, the Database Builder will now recognize the fact that you've switched to a different folder... It now behaves just like the other JCapper modules do.

FAQs
Q. Do I need to rebuild databases from scratch after installing this program update?

A. No. Not if you've kept current with the downloads. Now if you haven't kept current with the downloads then yes, chances are you will have to rebuild databases from scratch before using the Data Window to query playlist files built using older program version.

Q. Do I need to check the box on the Installer to make it give me a new JCapper2.mdb file?

A. No. Not if you've kept current with the downloads and checked the box last time. Now if you haven't kept current with the downloads - or you didn't check the box last time - then check the box this time.

Enjoy,
