Rachel Alexandra- Should she run in Belmont? |
Ishmael 5/20/2009 8:46:56 AM | I will probably be in distinct minority on this one, but I say sure. If she is fine run her. I cant believe how many hand ringing columns the past few days. From racing pundits and fans. Saying how she should be retired. How racing cant afford another tragedy. How they have nothing to gain by running her. How she is "too frail". I think its all utter nonsense.
She is a horse. A very good one. The Belmont is a grade on prestigious race. She can win two legs of the TC. Why not run? Everyone seems to run scared these days, even some fans. Thats probably why we have five horse fields in California and Kentucky now.

Whether it will "ruin" her legacy or whatever shouldnt be an issue either. Assuming the plan is not to retire her she should run in the big races, provided she is fit and healthy. Its funny a lot of pundits and fans talk all the time about racing "needing a star" (something I dont necessarily agree with but thats beside the point). Yet the same will encourage her connections not to run her. Out of fear.

She doesn't necessarily need to run back in 3 weeks at 1 1/2 miles at the Belmont against the boys to prove anything. Be as it may, I would freshen her up and point at some summer classic races such as the Whitney, Haskell, and or the Travers before setting her up for the Dream match-up in my opinion against Zenatta at the Breeders Cup. Either way I believe Jess Jackson and Asmussen will do what is best for Rachel Alexandra and for the fans ultimately, and that's what counts for me.
