TPW 4/1/2009 8:47:24 AM | I've seen alot of races and I assume that Todd Pletcher has too and Dunkirk's move is one that I've seen a thousand times. Actually, I was a victim of it in the last week.
A horse makes a wide, ill timed move to get the lead in the stretch only to be unable to sustain his/her momentum to the finish line.
Unfortunately, horses (even Dunkirk) only have a 1/4 mile spurt where they can run around horses and still have something for the finish.
I was actually impressed by his performance (only his 3rd career start) and had a look at his chart. It shows that he was 6 1/2 lengths back at the half, running his own opening half in 48 seconds. At the stretch call (1 mile) he was a length behind, running his mile in 1.35.2. So he ran a 47.2 middle 1/2 while wide and to be honest he was done by the time they hit the 1/8th pole as he actually grabbed the lead at the top of the stretch.
If I was to lay blame, it would be on Gomez. He made a premature move and Dunkirk couldn't sustain it. Usually these types of moves are made by jockey's with much less talent than Gomez, but even the best jockey's have errors in judgement.
I for one, have upgraded my opinion of Dunkirk. Let's see if his move is better timed in Kentucky.
