I last spoke with Ron late Monday afternoon. He had called to talk business, mentioned he was experiencing shortness of breath, and said he was going to get checked out.

I became concerned yesterday (Tues) when he failed to return a phone call.

This morning I called the Georgetown, KY Police Dept and asked them to do a wellness check.

While the dispatcher was taking Ron's info she asked me to stop and said she would have an Officer contact me. That's when I knew.

A few minutes later the phone rang and an Officer gave me the bad news.

I am deeply saddened and in shock right now as I post this.

I'll update this thread later once I know more about what this means for availability of our HDW files going forward.

Working remotely, Jim, the owner of HDW, put up v4 data files for Thurs the 9th.

Looking closer I see that all of the corrected Chart cycles have been run today.

The current plan is to get some capable people in the office and get them trained.

Ron was a one man show and I feel like I've been gut punched.

But the show must go on, and we'll get through this.

Sad news. Ron was always helpful and provided horse players with a great product.

Really a difficult time for his family, so sudden, unexpected. A very diligent worker for all of us. Concerned with accuracy, tremendous work ethic.

Greatly missed, I hope HDW will be able to continue. He was such major core to HDW, without him...

I'm still reeling. And will be for a long time to come.

Ron had called me as he was leaving the office late Monday afternoon. He told me his plans for the following workday/Tues:

1. Close out the prior month. (Among other things he was HDW's Office Manager.)

2. Finalize Wednesday's 01-08-2025 Gulfstream card and get the Zip file up on the download server.

3. Go get checked out for his shortness of breath.

In that EXACT order, and he wasn't having it otherwise.

That's who he was. Always putting others before himself.

I was asked to write up a list (bullet points) of everything I am aware of that Ron did for HDW - including everything he did as relates to our data. (I'm guessing Ken Massa and Dave Schwartz were likely asked to do the same.)

So that's what I did based on the thousands of conversations Ron and I had over the past 15 years. As I was writing I was surprised at how much I remembered - and how much Ron actually did for HDW - and how much of it he had automated.

Keep in mind my list covers the "what" but no real details about the "how" - which I was never privy to.

I've been told:

1. HDW had two tech guys in the office on Thurs. Both are very sharp.

2. After about 90 minutes both of them said: "Yeah, we can do this."

Ron was truly a one man show in that office.

But the show must go on.

Right now as I type this I have every indication it will.

So sorry to hear this. Ron was always so helpful. And understanding when I forgot to change my expired card.

Quick Update:

Cut and paste from an email received from HDW this morning:

Hi Jeff,

Hope all is well. We have created the email support@horsedata.com for customer communication. It is a shared mailbox for myself and some of my team members. You may provide that email to customers and post it on your website.

We hope to have access to the phones restored this week. We finally have access to the AT&T account.

I will keep you updated.

Regards,
Ryan
