Data Folder Structure for the coming New Year |
jeff 12/31/2017 12:00:31 PM | It's that time again. (Time to create folder structure for the coming new year.)
One of the things you NEVER want to do is mix and match files from different years on the same folder. The file names of data and results files that you download do not contain a year element.
If you fail to create (and use) folder structure for the new year:
Not only do you run the risk of overwriting 2017 files with 2018 files... But you also risk corrupting your 2017 databases in the event you run a db build using a 2017 data file and a 2018 results file (or vice versa) for file names involving the same track code, month, and day of month.
I (personally) use a single folder for each year with 4 separate sub folders (one per calendar quarter) and 2 additional sub folders (to facilitate breaking up my race day into multiple groups in the DFM Card Loader.)
My old 2017 folder structure looks like this:
C:\2017 C:\2017\Q1_2017 C:\2017\Q2_2017 C:\2017\Q3_2017 C:\2017\Q4_2017 C:\2017\Folder2 C:\2017\Folder3
My new 2018 folder structure looks like this:
C:\2018 C:\2018\Q1_2018 C:\2018\Q2_2018 C:\2018\Q3_2018 C:\2018\Q4_2018 C:\2018\Folder2 C:\2018\Folder3
As new files for 2018 become available for download - and for the first several days of the new year - I will be toggling back and forth between folders inside of the DFM - being EXTREMELY careful that all 2017 files are downloaded to my C:\2017\Q4_2017 folder - and that all 2018 files are downloaded to my C:\2018\Q1_2018 folder.
Mode 4 is the way to go the first time you run a build database on your new 2018 folder.
Use Mode 5 for each subsequent build on that folder thereafter.

jeff 12/31/2017 12:09:55 PM | All of that said, for those of you who've kept current with the program updates -- there's something new this year.
Right now on the JCapper Platinum Build 198 Program Downloads Page, there's a DFM (Data Folder Mgr) ONLY program update that comes with a menu item that launches a new screen.
The new screen lets you key in a 4 digit year -- that the interface then uses to create folder structure for the new year in the recommended format.
Here's a link to the release notes pdf: http://www.jcapper.com/helpDocs/DataFolderMgrOnlyBuild198_12312017.pdf
FYI, for those of you running JCapper Silver, expect to see a similar program update available on the Silver Build 198 program downloads page later today.
