1. Last week, we emailed HANA membership asking them to take a survey to determine whether or not they supported a boycott of CHDN because of the takeout hike.
Almost 90% of players who filled out the survey said they supported a boycott. Comments of those who responded were off the charts. We also collected voluntary handle data and close to 500 unique email addresses from players wanting to be kept current with latest updates about the boycott.
2. A look at AVG HANDLE PER RACE for the WED and THUR cards at Churchill last week showed a very pronounced trend vs. the same days (WED and THUR) from the same week previous year:
DOWN -25.7%
Handle from HANA membership withheld from all pools very noticeable both of those days.
Based on dollar amounts they were 'short' on those two race days - if I had to make an educated guess - I would say the amount withheld by players who said they were boycotting sums to appromimately $1 million a day.
3. Oaks Day Fri and Derby Day Sat are special event days. Handle on those two days is many times that of a typical Fri or Sat.
However, a close look at handle numbers given weather, track conditions, and field size for those two days this year vs. last year tells me they should have handled a lot more this year than they did.
This year, conditions for the KY Derby were sunny-fast-firm.
Last year they had an off track on Derby Day.
HANDLE - DERBY DAY SAT:
DAY 6 - KY DERBY CARD- 2013 = $185,356,133 DAY 6 - KY DERBY CARD- 2014 = $186,660,693 ------------------------------------------ UP $1,304,560
HANDLE - KY DERBY RACE:
KY DERBY RACE - 2013 = $130,459,888 KY DERBY RACE - 2014 = $129,159,892 ------------------------------------------ DOWN -$1,299,996
Despite having ideal conditions and being up slightly on their biggest day, these are the meet to date numbers:
HANDLE - 2013 MEET vs. 2014 MEET:
2013 - CDI MEET- THRU DAY 6 = $259,244,335 2014 - CDI MEET- THRU DAY 6 = $254,200,386 ------------------------------------------ DOWN -$5,043,949
If players continue to withhold money from Churchill pools for the remainder of the meet, they will hear the message loud and clear.
4. Whether or not track management, horsemen, and regulators implement takeout increases in other racing jurisdictions is still very much up to you.
