| jeff 2/22/2013 11:55:22 AM | Win 8... Yes. Just like Win7 or Vista the keys to getting a good install are: 1. Having true admin rights on the machine (so that right clicking an app that you want to install and selecting Run as Admin really does mean that you are running the selected app as an Admin.) Alternately, you can turn off UAC (and restart the machine) prior to beginning an install. 2. Install the VB6 Runtime on the machine. (After downloading, right click and select Run as Admin.) 3. Run the Extractor. (After downloading, right click and select Run as Admin.) Tablet?... To the best of my knowledge no. That said, I am aware of a handful of players who have JCapper installed on a machine connected to the internet that they leave at home - and who operate apps on that machine (including JCapper) remotely using a tablet. -jp .

| jeff 3/8/2013 7:17:47 PM | Depends how "mini" the machine is. Is it a computer with a Windows operating system and a c:\ drive? If so, then you can install JCapper on it. As mentioned above, keys to getting a good install are a user account with true admin rights so that you can register dlls. You'll also need to install the VB6 Runtime prior to doing a JCapper install. Is it a tablet only? (For example if it's a Kindle you won't be able to install JCapper on it.) In reading everything I could find on the web about registering legacy dlls in Win8, it appears there's a Service pack that includes the VB6 Runtime that is now being included in most Win8 builds. However, the dlls needed to render the Common Dialog Control - also known as ComDlg32.ocx - are not included in that service pack. It also appears that true Run as Admin functionality (which enables the user to bypass UAC or User Account Control) in Win8 is different than the Run as Admin functionality offered in Win7 and Vista. If while using an open instance of Windows Explorer to browse a folder, you right click an executable file for an app that you want to run and select RUN AS ADMIN - apparently in Win8 you are not granted true admin rights like you are when you do the exact same thing in Win7 or Vista. However, if you create a new desktop shortcut to an app that you want to run - and right click the desktop shortcut and select RUN AS ADMIN... doing THAT gives you true admin rights. As it so happens - JCapper's Install Wizard/Help Doc Viewer (filename: JCapper_InstallWizard.exe) - the module with the blue city scape images on it that you see during a JCapper Install - That module doesn't use a common dialog control - and therefore runs in Win8 without throwing a "ComDlg32.ocx" error message like the Main Module does. As it also so happens - JCapper's Install Wizard/Help Doc Viewer contains a separate Menu item capable of registering all of the needed dll and ocx files - including dlls needed to render the Common Dialog Control - aka "ComDlg32.ocx." Strategy for Registering "ComDlg32.ocx" in Windows 8 1. Create a new desktop shortcut for JCapper's Install Wizard/Help Doc Viewer. Hint: When creating the shortcut browse to the c:\JCapperBuild folder and use the following file as the shortcut's target file: JCapper_InstallWizard.exe. 2. Right click the new desktop shortcut created in step 1 above and select RUN AS ADMIN. 3. When the Install Wizard/Help Doc Viewer opens - note the 2nd menu item down from the top on the left hand side labeled "RegSvr32 Register OCX Files" Screenshot here and give it a click. You should receive registration successful messages for each set of DLLs or OCX files - and because you are running the Install Wizard from a desktop shortcut where you right clicked the shortcut and selected Run as Admin - Windows should have granted you true admin rights - and the dlls and ocx files should actually register this time. -jp . ~Edited by: jeff on: 3/30/2013 at: 12:43:12 AM~

| JustRalph 11/10/2013 2:39:21 AM | jeff just got a new windows 8.1 tablet. asus t100 two things first of all the only problem on install was having to register comxxx something which i solved by using the tool included on the install app. it re registered all dlls etc and worked fine when i click the calc races button i get three buttons that appear, asking which folder to use. i press folder one and away it goes. but its a pain in the ass the other thing is that the jcapper buttons are so small, its hard as hell to click them correctly. i am using the tab key and highlighting the one i want and hitting enter. any suggestions? i turned the resolution down and doesnt help much. any way to make the buttons bigger on your end?

| JustRalph 11/10/2013 4:53:05 AM | it will do both fine except the menus are very small on the main jcapper control panel in the data window it works pretty well. there are not so many menu items stacked on top of each other it works. using the detachable keyboard is almost a must though for navigating. even a lower resolution settings on the tablet, it doesnt help much if you have to use a keyboard, i guess a regular laptop would be a better choice though. 50\50 on whether i keep it or not at the moment

On my current laptop, it is a memory hog, slowing everything else to a crawl when calculating races or using the data window. Thanks again, Tom C

(I'd likely have to buy a similar device to replicate the same user experience as you and go from there.) That said, you do have the ability at your end - in the Enhanced Settings Module - to make the program use the original SINGLE Calc Races button (instead of 3.) Here's how: 1. Click System Settings. 2. Click Enhanced Settings. 3. For the setting labeled "Main Module Calc Races Button Display" change the setting from "0 Multi-Folder Select" to "1 Single Cmd Button" and hit the "SAVE" button. FYI, these settings persist to the c:\2004\JCapper.mdb file... meaning that if the screen resolution on the tablet is too high to make this practical: You can persist the setting on a pc or laptop and copy the c:\2004\JCapper.mdb file over to the tablet. -jp .

| JustRalph 11/10/2013 4:58:43 PM | Jeff Thanks for the tip on the calc races button. That worked. Pinching to zoom does not work because jcapper runs in the "desktop" mode. It doesn't play with the pinch, to be more precise. I guess the bottom line is that it works, but it's tough to work with. The one thing that might change this is a stylus with a very fine point. If I reduce the resolution down to 1024x768 (lowest it will go) jcapper is easier to use. But everything else looks like crap. Bottom line is that it works. But if you're old and don't have the eyes of an eagle or finger tips like eagle claws, it will be a little tough to work with.

| jeff 11/11/2013 8:43:34 AM | The strategy of creating desktop shortcuts to .exe files on the c:\JCapper\Exe folder should work. Once a shortcut to one of the .exe files is created (provided the proper path info is specified) clicking the shortcut accomplishes the same thing as clicking the corresponding launch button on the JCapper Main Module... The requested module gets launched. However, not all of the routines have separate .exe files. Both the Calc Races and Build Database routines are completely self contained in the Main Module .exe file. I'll compile a list of the .exe files - and then come back and post them. -jp .

In other words if it - or some other UI element the same size or larger - were made 'click-able' - and if (for example) clicking it resulted in a Calc Races routine... | JustRalph 11/11/2013 1:19:24 PM | Jeff That would probably work. That graphic could be about the right size. I know where you're going using that graphic as a measure. I have been testing and it works. Besides the resolution, that's the only true jcapper issue. These apps on tablets in win8 are the real problem. They run legacy style apps as advertised, but they don't play well. They have to run in their own window etc. The win8 native stuff runs together just fine including multiple windows side by side. The minute you open an older app, the entire system slows to a crawl and to get to the older app you use a key combo or a dedicated button (hardware) to drop into what we use to call "real mode" which takes you to a whole new screen. It's basically a virtual machine running inside the ops system. It's hidden well but obvious to old time users who have seen this before. I am thinking of returning this tablet and just going with a win 7 laptop. Win8 is vastly inferior to IOS. Of course win8 was not originally conceived for touch screen use. Jeff, don't go out of your way and reprogram anything. I would say you should wait and see what comes down the pike. This is a poor implementation. Thanks very much for putting up with my test.

The behavior I've programmed in is that whenever the user clicks the image of the horse - or whenever the user "grabs" the lower right hand border of the Main Module and then drags it until the size of the Main Module reaches about 3X its normal size... At that point the Tablet Menu pops up. Here's a link to a screenshot so that you can see what it looks like compared to the Main Module: http://www.jcapper.com/messageboard/avatars/tabletmenu.jpg At this point it's just a simple menu with clickable buttons mimicking those on the Main Module. So far it doesn't appear to add a whole lot of overhead (in terms of addl ram memory used.) Ralph, I'll probably publish it as part of an upcoming program update rather than discard it. My thinking is you can't be the only one out there considering a newer device with a touch screen or a monitor designed for high screen resolution. Even if you decide to return your tablet - others out there are likely interested in a menu that's easier to see. -jp .

| JustRalph 11/17/2013 2:11:35 AM | no way to disable the other part of windows. remember, you need that part of windows for the touch screen to work. Or use a different version of windows? Not sure how to wipe and install it? Most of these tablets with intel processors are dialed in on Win8, not even sure they would run a lesser version of windows? I guess you could run a mouse? via bluetooth? to get around not having the touch screen? I looked around on the net. couldn't find anybody who could get it to work. Drivers are not available. The screen doesn't load on some tablets at all with an older version. Bricked the tablets. ASUS refused to help them also. Yikes! Select the track code from the track codes drop down located beneath the image of the horse on the left hand side of the Main Module. Screenshot: here. 2. Select your race number from the race number drop down that appears after performing step 1 above. Screenshot: here. 3. Click the secondary Calc Races button that appears after performing steps 1 or 2 above. Screenshot: here. Note that the button gives you two options: a. You can use it to perform a Calc Races on the track code selected in step 1 above if you opt to bypass step 2 above and not select an individual race number. b. You can use it to perform a Calc Races on an individual race after performing both steps 1 and 2 above. I designed this feature with the following scenario in mind: 1. One or more horses scratched at the gate in a race I am betting or am considering betting. 2. Pull up the race in the Manual Changes Module and quickly check the boxes for the late scratches, hit Save, and x-out of the Manual Changes Module. 3. Run a Calc Races for the affected race only. 4a. Regenerate the SQL UDM Plays Report to see what if any business UDMs are firing in the current race. - or alternately - 4b. Click the HTML TWO button in the HTML Report Generator to see an HTML Report for the current race. - or alternately - 4c. Reselect the track code in the Live Play Module to force a tote refresh and redisplay the current race. - or alternately - 4d. Run a Manual Calc in the Live Play Module for the current race if operating the Live Play Module in ML/Manual Mode. On newer machines the above process takes about 10-12 seconds - and in most cases - that's enough time to cancel tickets and/or re-bet the race accordingly. -jp . ~Edited by: jeff on: 7/4/2014 at: 11:55:52 AM~
