I just got off the phone with Ron Tiller. He came in to work this morning to discover that a key server had crashed.

As a result, files for today Sun Nov 11, 2012 can't be uploaded to the server so that we can download them.

Affected are not just our files - but files for all of the other HDW software vendors as well.

The current plan - before fixing the server - is that HDW is going to zip up files for today and email them to me. (ETA on that is approximately an hour from now - or by 11:15 or so Eastern time.)

As soon as I receive today's files via email I will upload them to the JCapper server and post links here in this thread on the JCapper Message Board so that you can download them.

Thanks in advance for your understanding in this matter.

HDW JCapper V4 Race Files for Sunday Nov 11, 2012...

Download Instructions:

Overview--
Download to your hard drive, copy to your current active data folder (as persisted in the DFM) and process in the normal way using a JCP File Build Routine.

Detailed Instructions:

1. Launch the DFM to see what your current active data folder is. That is where you want to save your files in step 2 below.

2. Right-Click link to a zip file for an individual race card. In IE select "SaveTarget As" - or in Firefox select "Save Link As" - and use the dialog box that pops up to select the folder where you want to download the file to. (Hint: save the file to your current active data folder as persisted in the DFM.) After selecting the folder where you want to save the file to, download the file to that folder.

3. Repeat step 2 above until all zip files are downloaded.

4. Launch the HDW File Mgr and run a JCP File Build Routine in the normal manner.

That's it!

V4 Files:

A single zip file that gets you all 13 race cards for the day:
SunNov11_V4

Or, alternately - links to individual race cards:
AQU
CD
CRC
GG
HAW
HOL
LA
MNR
PHA
PM

V3 Files:

I didn't have any problems downloading the files for Sun the 11th from HDW. Maybe because I am in the habit of doing most of my work the night before.

I am having problems downloading tomorrows races.

So, I'll "assume" the servers are still down?

As I have to do quite a bit of work, modifying the files for my use, before I run my UDM's through them, the earlier the better for me.

Jeff, will you post a link for Mondays races? Any chance of getting them before 6am?

Thanks,

Windoor

I just heard from Ron Tiller at HDW. The key server used to host the file download pages at the HDW site is toast. He told me he is headed home after a long day for some (much needed) sleep and plans on getting an early start on things tomorrow morning.

File delivery for Monday Nov 12, 2012 will most likely play out as follows:

• Until further notice, consider this thread your source for JCapper files. (I'll post an update once the HDW server is back up and running.)

• Expect Ron to email zipped up JCapper race files to me tomorrow morning - and expect me to post download links right here in this thread as soon as the files themselves appear in my inbox.

• I'll set my alarm for 6:00 am Pacific (I'm on the west coast) so that I can check my email.

• Expect me to post an update (status of HDW server... eta for files, etc.) at that time.

For those of you reading this... I ask you to refrain from calling up HDW to ask about files. Instead, check back here. In other words, it might be a good idea to cut Ron and the guys at HDW some slack. They stand a better chance of getting the server rebuilt faster if they are left alone so they can work.

Update 6:15 am Pacific... The world looks very different this time of day than 2-3 hrs from now when I usually get up. Mainly things are quiet.

File Server still down. Inbox empty.

Will post download links as soon as files are received.

Check back later.

Coming up on post time for FLX and Parx.

Looks like a pen and paper day. I hope I remember how.

With a couple of slow days ahead , lets catch up on some of "Lifes" stuff and let HDW do their thing.

I'm sure , in one way or another , we all had to do some computer repairs and knows how difficult that can be...:(

I'm going to check in with some of my "Sandy" friends and see what I can do ...

You?

I've been a computer programmer for 36 years. What is going on here is unacceptable. ANY commercial enterprise MUST be prepared for exactly this sort of situation and have backup and restore procedures designed to have them back up and running in a few hours (at MOST).

It is becoming increasingly obvious that HDW was completely unprepared for this eventuality; an eventuality that is not at all that unusual in the IT world.

I agree. it is unacceptable, also that they do not even bother to directly inform customers. nice they contact Jeff so he can tell us to be patient, but my business certainly could not operate so casually and expect customers to be patient while giving them no information.

I have to agree. I did not think to check this site for HDW files yesterday so I lost an important Sunday. Now Monday as well.

I have run several businesses and cannot imagine a lack of a backup computer shutting me down for days ...

I wish HDW well, but I really wish there was an alternative for getting JCapper file data ...

If you run your horse racing activities like a business, you also should have a backup plan.

As I still have an account with PTD, I was able to download today's files and continue with my business. It takes more time, but I still get the job done.

Windoor

These are the first truly negative customer service related comments posted on this board that I can recall... and yet I have to agree with them.

I really wish they had zipped up today's files and sent them out to me earlier. In my humble opinion, that would have made a difference.

Well HDW's problem is certainly no reflection upon you Jeff. YOUR customer service continues to be excellent. On Spinal Tap's amp you'd be a 12.

Windoor,

Are you able to use PTD files in JCapper? If so, I would like that ability as well.

I just returned home, and HDW's download site is back up. However all of the result files from 11-10 are missing.

Ron Tiller just called to provide me with an update:

• They now have a rebuilt file server up and running - with limited capability.

• Files for Nov 11th and Nov 12th ONLY have been uploaded to it - and should be available for download (at least for most of us) in JCapper's File Download Tool.

• A few minutes ago I was able to confirm this myself. I used the File Download Tool in the JCapper File Mgr to download and build files... JCP files and Charts for the 11th... followed by JCP files for the 12th.

• Now that the immediate need has been addressed (at least for most of us) -- Expect back data and results... 45 days of it (just like before) to appear on the rebuilt file server sometime within the next 24 hrs.

• By "most of us" I mean those of you who signed up with HDW prior to June 01, 2012. If that describes you, then you should pretty much be good to go as of right now... meaning that the rebuilt server should recognize your HDW userid and password... the one saved in the boxes near the top of your HDW File Download Tool. (Let me know immediately if this is not the case.)

• The rest of you... by that I mean those of you who signed up with HDW after June 01, 2012... if the HDW userid and password issued to you at time of sign up does not work - you should contact HDW and tell them you are one of the ones who needs to have your password "reset." After that, you should find that the HDW File Download Tool will once again work for you.

• The "download cart" (or java app) used to download files manually from the HDW website hasn't been installed onto the rebuilt file server yet. However, they do expect to have that up and running within the next day or so.

• Just like you and me, they never want to go through something like this again. They voiced the need to actively maintain a backup server (and I have every reason to believe they will follow through and make that a reality.)

No Jim, these files will not work within J/Capper. I wish, as I have them back to 1996.

I started with these files and software after I got my first PC, so I am very familiar with the software.

As a spot/angle type of player, I mostly look for patterns. So, I don't need to do a lot of heavy number crunching.

I will lose about 3 to 5 percent at the win average without J/Cappers excellent filters, but I can still remain profitable with my good stuff.

Windoor

Charts for the 10th... I don't have them Don . I normally pick them up for the previous race day first thing morning of the following race day. Woke up Sunday morning (the 11th) to find the server down.

If anyone on the East Coast did manage to pick up charts for the 10th before the server went offline - if you email them to me, I'll be more than happy to put them up on my server and provide download links so that everyone can have them.

A few of you on the East Coast did manage to pick up charts for the 10th before the server failed. Because they're not up on the new HDW file server yet, I've posted download links (below) as promised...

HDW Text Chart Result Files - Sat Nov 10, 2012

Links to individual F.zip files:
AQU
BEU
CD
CRC
CT
DED
GG
HAW
HOL
LRL
MNR
PEN
PHA
PM
RET
RP
TDN
TUP
WO
ZIA

Note: Charts for all tracks except Los Al which runs late at night on the West coast and (apparently) wasn't available at the time the server blew up.

Install instructions:

1. Save each of the individual zip files to your current active data folder as persisted in the DFM.

2. Launch the HDW File Mgr and run an XRD File Build Routine in the normal manner.

That's it!
