Windoor 1/2/2012 12:33:33 AM | Something occurred to me as I was deciding on what factors to use on my next database build. As some of you might know, I use a custom Excel application to filter for my "spot" plays and other factors I deem important and assign them names, replacing the owners name, sire, siressire etc. This way I can filter on them within J/Capper.
I use a rank filter for one of these, and really like the number one ranked horse for this factor as it only needs a few more filters to make it profitable.
When I look at the number of winners for the number two ranked horse using the same filter, I see I am missing out on some nice odd horses.
After some experimenting with the J/Capper filter set, I found that if I added a couple of more filters to this horse it also makes the play profitable and gives me more plays than if I just lumped the top two together.
The premise being, if the horse ranks number one, it gets a play with a minimum amount of other filters needed. There are times when the number one ranked horse does not qualify as it lacks other attributes than are needed. Usually this just means I pass the race. But when the number two ranked horse has those and more, that makes it a value wager.
This may be a simple concept to others here, but it was epiphany moment for me when it comes to database handicapping, and has opened up a number of more plays that I may have passed up on if the number one ranked horse did not qualify.
Of course this can be expanded to any play that requires a top ranked horse to begin with.
The downside is that you sometimes get two horses that qualify, but this has never really been a problem for the way I play.
Just thought I would share,
Regards,
Windoor.
