Welcome
Right now I'm in the process of implementing my own version of a message board. What you see as I post this (klunky and klugy as it may be) represents progress made in the first week. You should know that I created the database and pages myself - from scratch. The initial site design is based on 5-7 yr old technology - ASP pages and VB Com object that interfaces with a SQL database.

Site Security
Because of the way outsiders were able to hack into the Inivsion Power Board my first order of business was creating a set of safeguards that pretty much stops any and all attempts at SQL Injection Attacks dead in its tracks. That's the primary reason for me using ASP pages. It's a technology I know well and one I can maintain myself as needs arise.

Internet Explorer
The initial pages will require you to use Internet Explorer when registering your user account and making posts. You should be able to VIEW the site with Firefox - but not interface with the database - at least at first. As this thing evolves I do plan on making this site Firefox friendly. But for the time being if you want to post you'll need to use IE.

User Registration
Although it might take a few more days before this site is stable to the point of being ready for you guys to actually make posts - you should be able to click the REGISTER link and create your own initial user accounts. When the time comes (just like before) I'll need to manually activate your account. But feel free to self register and create your user account at this time.

The Old Message Board
AJ was kind enough to make monthly backups of the old message board database for me. Part of my plan is to write a VB program that imports all of those old posts (there are thousands of them) into the new database. It might be a few weeks until I can get to this. But it is definitely something I'm going to pursue.

A Work In Progress
Over the next several weeks (maybe even months) I'll be making changes to this site... adding new functionality as time permits. I'll probably need to take the site down for maintenance from time to time. Pleas be understanding of that.

Creating an Intranet isn't a new experience for me. But creating one on the fly where 150+ users all want to be able to use it yesterday is. In case you didn't know my background is that of a web developer. So most of this is nothing new to me. It's been a while though. And skills that you don't use tend to deteriorate.

So I ask that you please bear with me and maybe we can get through this thing together.

Made some significant progress today (I think.) In about an hour I'm going to start activating user accounts so that you guys can start making posts.

We'll see how it goes from there.

So where's the section where you can tone down the colors a bit :)

Glad to see we're up and running again!

Will we have to sign in every time we come to the board, or have I missed the remember me thingy?

Jack, I've decided to not have the new board use cookies to track user activity like the old board did.

I actually think things are safer this way...

One strategy used by the spambots/hackers that took over the old board was to get tracking cookies onto a user's machine and then record sites that the user visited - or record phrases that the user keyed into a search engine. That could be followed up by highjacking the user's web browser with a trojan capable of controlling/redirecting the user's browser to ad sites having (somewhat) related content to (legit) sites that the user previously visited or searched for.

For that reason I've decided not to have the new board use cookies at this time.

It does mean that you'll need to log in each time you visit the new board if you want to make a post or get into one of the site's restricted areas.

Hope that makes sense.

I'm looking forward to the board becoming Firefox friendly. I do not use IE for anything. Also, I was wondering if there will be a members list, a way to see who is browsing, a way to upload avatars, and a way to change the colors for our individual preference.

But most of all, it is nice to have the board back. I'm just getting tired of signing into the JCapper2008 area and not seeing the ugrade. LOL

Jeff,

To let you know, I tried to use quotation marks around the words Firefox friendly and the post from the quotation marks on was dropped after I hit submit even though it looked okay in Preview. Once I dropped the quotation marks, the message posted fine.

Thanks for letting me know about the quote character. It's one of those things I'll need to get handled.

Yes, there will be a way to see who is browsing... a user list... a way to send private messages... a search function... and believe it or not even a way to set your own color schema. And by all means if you have an image file you'd like to use as an avatar: email it to me and I'll get it uploaded to the the server.

But before any of that...

Expect to see a downloads page for JCapper2008...

ETA under 48 hrs.

I may have that quote character issue "handled."

"Looks" like it.

"Kind of" does

'Single' quotes too.

good lord jeff, I don't know how you do it all.
managing an unplanned for event like that on top of everything else has to be challenging.
thanks for the progress updates.
